Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is this the best tour to see the birds & whales?
A: A resounding YES!
Gatherall’s visits the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve – the largest breeding colony of Atlantic Puffins – so it’s the best place to see them. The waters around the Reserve provide some of the best feeding for many species of whales. This greatly increases your chances of finding these magnificent creatures. Combine the best location with the best vessel and best crew and you have a tour that is a “must do” on every traveler’s list.

Sighting by Season

Q: How long is the trip?
A: Gatherall’s tour averages 90 minutes. Trip times may vary depending on weather conditions, if and where the whales are feeding, presence or absence of icebergs, weather, etc.

Gatherall’s catamaran greatly reduces travel time to and from the Ecological Reserve. This allows you to spend more time with the birds and whales. Customized departures are available on request.

Q: How safe is the tour?
A: Attention to safety is Gatherall’s principal concern. In addition to the standards and requirements set forth by Transport Canada, Gatherall’s has put in place additional protocols and policies to ensure your safety. Gatherall’s catamaran is designed and equipped in accordance with the latest and most thorough safety standards for life saving, fire fighting, damage survivability, etc.

Q: If we reserve, is the trip be guaranteed to go?
A: Gatherall's sails rain or shine, however, we reserve the right to cancel or to delay a departure. Reservations can be rescheduled or refunded. Gatherall’s catamaran is maintained to the highest standard to ensure minimal disruption in service.

Q: Where does the tour leave from?
A: Gatherall's operates out of Bay Bulls. A trip to the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve with Gatherall’s is only 25 minutes from the major hotels / downtown St. John’s. Shuttle service is available from the major hotels and B&B’s in the St. John’s area (additional charges apply).
